With the advent of modern workstations, a small improvement was immediately 
evident; by providing good, variable-width fonts, these workstations 
significantly decreased the eyestrain in reading any kind of text, including 
electronic mail.

}However, people looked at all those bits on the screen, and they yearned for 
more.  In particular, it seemed very strange, with such fancy fonts, to still 
be giving special ***EMPHASIS** by the same old primitive methods.
