BENCH NOTES — SECOND SHELF CYCLES
Mechanic: R. Whitbourne

2024-11-12
Touring frame, 1987, steel. Rear hub had play; re-cupped, new bearings,
re-greased. Freehub body replaced. Chain measured at 0.9% — replaced, and the
cassette with it. Told the customer why: a new chain on a worn cassette skips
under load within a week and we end up doing the job twice.

Hydraulic discs bled front and rear. Pads glazed rather than worn — sanded
and refitted, advised replacement at the next service. Rotor run-out 0.15 mm,
  within tolerance, left alone.

Creak traced to the seatpost, not the bottom bracket. It usually is. Cleaned,
light grease on a steel post in a steel frame, torque to spec.

Wheel build: 32 hole, three cross, 1,286 mm spokes drive side. Tension within
12% across the drive side, dished to 0.3 mm, trued to 0.2 mm. Stress-relieved
twice and re-trued after the second.

Child's bike, free service. Brake levers moved in to fit small hands, stem
lowered, tyres to 35 psi. No charge, as always.

STANDING NOTE ON THE WALL:
We do not fit a new chain to a worn cassette and call it a service.
Tell the customer the true price, or refuse the job.
