Page layout

Print conventions. Each of these changes the page count, which changes the spine width — rebuild the covers afterwards. Build book does it in the right order.

Half-title page The title alone on the opening leaf. Turning it off moves the copyright page from page 3 to page 2, which is what publishers who set their own front matter usually expect. Start every chapter on a right-hand page Traditional for printed books. Inserts a blank leaf where needed, so it costs pages — and pages cost money. Start every part on a right-hand page The same, for part dividers.

Finished front cover A cover you designed elsewhere, with your title and name already on it. Used exactly as it is — BookForge prints nothing over it. Same shape as your book, 1800px or wider.

Auto mark

Cover artwork A mark, illustration or photograph to sit inside BookForge's cover, which sets your title and name around it. Leave empty for the generated mark.

Setting one clears the other: a finished cover and BookForge's own layout can't both be the front cover. The back cover and spine are always generated, since KDP takes the three as one file.

Where the folds are for checking, not for upload

The spine is invisible in the finished cover, because the artwork runs straight through the fold. Magenta marks the two folds, blue the trim, grey the barcode's keep-clear area.
