Renest CLI Source-Available Licence
Version 1.0, 9 August 2026

Copyright (c) 2026 the Renest authors.

This licence covers the Renest command-line tool and its supporting modules.
It does NOT cover:

  * the escape hatch (src/renest/escape/), which is Apache-2.0 and always will
be — it is the artefact you run when we are gone, so it carries no
    conditions of ours;
  * the archive format specifications (specs/), which are Apache-2.0;
  * the ComfyUI panel, which is a separate repository under GPL-3.0.

Each of those ships with its own licence text. Where this licence and one of
those disagree about a file, the file's own licence wins.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. WHAT YOU MAY DO
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Subject to section 2, you may use, copy, modify, and redistribute this
software and works derived from it, for any purpose, with or without charge,
including inside a business.

You may read the source. You may audit it, fork it, patch it, and run your
patched copy. You may publish your modifications.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. THE ONE THING YOU MAY NOT DO
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You may not use this software, or any work derived from it, to provide to
third parties a commercial service that competes with the Renest hosted
service, and you may not redistribute it for that purpose.

A "commercial service that competes with the Renest hosted service" means
offering to third parties, for a fee or as part of a paid product, the
storage, transfer, deduplication, cataloguing, or transfer-of-custody of
machine environments or their component files, where this software or a
derivative of it provides a material part of that offering.

Everything else is permitted. In particular, none of the following is
competing: internal use inside any organisation of any size; consulting or
support work where the customer runs the software themselves; teaching;
research; packaging this software for a distribution; or building tools that
interoperate with it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. THE PERMANENT CARVE-OUT (this one cannot be taken away)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any individual may, permanently and unconditionally, use this software to
pack, sign links for, restore, verify, and export THEIR OWN data.

This permission does not depend on the continued existence of the Renest
project, of any company operating it, on you holding an account, on an account
being in good standing, or on anything else. It survives the discontinuation
of the hosted service and the dissolution of its operator. Nothing elsewhere
in this licence, and no later version of it, may narrow this section for a
copy you already have.

The reason this section exists: the whole point of the software is that a
setup you got working can be brought back later. A right to your own data that
lapses when we do is not a right.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. NOTICES
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you redistribute this software or a derivative, keep this licence file and
the copyright notice with it, and state plainly what you changed.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. NO WARRANTY
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The software is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or
implied, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability,
fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. In no event shall the
authors or copyright holders be liable for any claim, damages, or other
liability, whether in an action of contract, tort, or otherwise, arising from,
out of, or in connection with the software or the use or other dealings in the
software.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. IF SECTION 2 IS UNENFORCEABLE WHERE YOU ARE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If a court of competent jurisdiction holds section 2 unenforceable, that
holding does not affect sections 3, 4, or 5, which remain in force.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This licence grants no rights in trade marks. "Renest" is a trade mark of its
owner; this licence does not permit you to use it to name your fork or your
service.
