# safe-voice

**Layered prompt-injection defense for LLM voice & text agents.**

`safe-voice` screens user input (and retrieved/tool content) for prompt-injection
and jailbreak attempts before it reaches your model — across **English, five
Indic languages, Hinglish, and obfuscated / romanized variants**. It was
extracted from a production real-time voice-agent stack and hardened for
open-source use: framework-agnostic, dependency-light, and **fail-open by
design** so a broken model never blocks a legitimate user.

## Why

Prompt injection is the top security risk for LLM applications. Most open tools
only screen English text and only at one layer. Real traffic — especially voice —
arrives transcribed, code-switched, romanized, or in a non-Latin script, which
slips past single-layer English filters. `safe-voice` combines complementary
layers so a miss in one is caught by another:

A **benign-conversational allowlist** prevents the ML layer from punishing normal
voice-repair phrases ("can you repeat that?", "show me my summary"), and a
**strike system** lets you deflect a few times before ending a session.

Build `SecurityConfig` directly, from env (`SAFEVOICE_*`), or from an untrusted
dict (values are clamped, never raised):

## Design principles

- **Fail open.** A missing/broken model or a translation timeout never blocks a
  legitimate turn — the deterministic layers remain the floor.
- **Framework-agnostic.** The guard returns a decision; it never speaks, ends a
  session, or imports your stack.
- **Privacy-preserving audit.** Events strip URLs to host+path, cap samples, and
  never log keys or full conversations.
- **No silent allowlisting.** The benign allowlist fails closed on any sensitive
  target or extraction phrasing.

## Limitations

`safe-voice` reduces risk; it is not a guarantee. The ML model is English-centric
(hence the translation layer), novel attacks may pass, and thresholds are a
precision/recall trade-off you should tune on your own traffic. Combine it with
least-privilege tool design and output validation. See
