# zre — Pure Python ZRE (RFC 36) Implementation

> **ZRE** implements the [ZeroMQ Realtime Exchange Protocol (RFC 36)](https://rfc.zeromq.org/spec/36/) for peer-to-peer discovery and messaging. No brokers, no servers — peers find each other on the LAN with zero configuration, or dial each other directly across subnets by address.

## Features

| Feature | Description |
|---------|-------------|
| **Zero-configuration** | No central servers, brokers, or admin |
| **Peer discovery** | Automatic via UDP broadcast beacons (port 15670), or direct dial via `connect_peer(host, port)` where broadcasts can't reach |
| **Group messaging** | Join/leave named groups, multicast via unicast |
| **Direct messaging** | Whisper to individual peers |
| **Heartbeating** | Automatic detection of peers going evasive, silent, or dead |
| **Language neutral** | Speaks RFC 36 on the wire — interoperates with any compliant peer |
| **Pure Python** | Single asyncio event loop, no threads, no C extensions |

## Installation

```bash
pip install zre
```

```bash
# Use the zre venv (required) — all commands below use this exact binary
export PYTHON=python3
$PYTHON --version  # Python 3.14.4
# Option A: pinned latest (recommended, verified 2026-08-27)
$PYTHON -m pip install -r requirements.txt
$PYTHON -m pip install -e .
# Option B: from pyproject (also pulls latest via pip)
$PYTHON -m pip install -e .[dev]      # pytest, pytest-asyncio, ruff
$PYTHON -m pip install -e .[secure]  # cryptography for secure_chat
```

> `requirements.txt` is generated from **live `pip freeze`** of the libs `zre` actually imports
> (`zre/node.py` → `pyzmq`, `examples/secure_chat.py` → `cryptography`) plus dev tools.
> Regenerate after `pip install -U`:
> ```bash
> python3 -m pip install -U pyzmq cryptography pytest pytest-asyncio ruff
> python3 -m pip freeze | grep -E "^(pyzmq|cryptography|pytest|ruff)" > requirements.txt
> ```

## Prerequisites — Extra Tools (like mpv / ffmpeg)

`zre` core needs only `pyzmq` (and `cryptography` for `secure_chat`). Everything below is **optional**, but required for some examples and for full validation.

| Tool | Needed for | Check | Install if missing (Ubuntu/Debian) | What our code does if missing |
|------|------------|-------|------------------------------------|-------------------------------|
| `mpv` / `vlc` | `examples/media_stream.py` playback (optional) | `which mpv && mpv --version` | `sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y mpv` | `media_stream.py` saves to `--out`; play after with `mpv ./media_out/<file>.mp4` |
| `ffmpeg` / `ffprobe` | re-mux for **true live** fragmented mp4, and file validation | `which ffmpeg && ffmpeg -version; which ffprobe && ffprobe -version` | `sudo apt install -y ffmpeg` | `media_stream.py` still works for `~/Videos/` mp4s (non-fragmented → `mpv` buffers until `MEDIA_END` then plays). For incremental live, re-mux: `ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -movflags frag_keyframe+empty_moov -c copy frag.mp4` — then `mpv` plays chunk-by-chunk as they arrive. |
| `py-spy` | `py-spy-watch-tests.sh` / `run_tests_with_monitor.sh` RSS + stack dumps | `which py-spy || ls ~/.cargo/bin/py-spy` | `cargo install py-spy` or `pip install py-spy` (needs `sudo` for `dump` — without it we still log RSS) | Watcher prints `WARN: passwordless sudo unavailable — logging RSS only (dumps skipped)` and continues with `ps` RSS only |
| `tmux` | `make demo-*` isolated panes, live `ps` validation | `which tmux && tmux -V` | `sudo apt install -y tmux` | You can still run examples directly: `python3 examples/chat.py alice --port 15670` in two terminals |
| `~/Videos/` | `file_transfer.py` / `media_stream.py` demo media | `ls ~/Videos/ \| head` | Not required — any file works. Pass it via `--file` (send) or `receive <dir>`. If `--dir`/`--file` is missing, the tools print `File not found`. | Falls back to any `pathlib.Path` you pass |
| `zre` venv | **all** commands | `ls .venv/bin/python3 && .venv/bin/python3 --version` | `python3 -m venv .venv && .venv/bin/python3 -m pip install -r requirements.txt && .venv/bin/python3 -m pip install -e .` | A virtualenv is required so `from zre import ZreNode` resolves; `pip install -e .` with `editable_mode=compat` is recommended (see `zre` venv notes) |

> **Protocol conformance (RFC 36):** UDP beacon `ZRE\x01` + 16-byte UUID + 2-byte port (22 B), `HELLO/SHOUT/WHISPER/JOIN/LEAVE/PING/PING_OK` with `0xAAA1`/`v2`/`seq`, `Dealer` identity `0x01+uuid`, `Router` mandatory, `EVASIVE`/`EXPIRED` timers, `X-` headers. **Implementation notes:** `asyncio` single loop, `pyzmq` `NOBLOCK` instead of `zmq.asyncio`, per-peer `want_seq` lenient update (not drop) for `HELLO-before-JOIN` race, `HELLO` back on `ENTER` for mutual readiness, `SO_REUSEPORT` + `SO_BROADCAST` + `127.255.255.255`/`127.0.0.1` beacons for single-host tmux tests, `ZreNode.set_*` before `start()` with validation, robust `Codec.decode` bounds checks.

## Quick Start

```python
import asyncio
from zre import ZreNode
async def main():
    node = ZreNode("my-app")
    node.set_port(15670)  # override beacon port to isolate clusters
    await node.start()
    await node.join("CHAT")
    # Must run beacon/ROUTER loop concurrently with events
    run_task = asyncio.create_task(node.run())
    async for event in node.events():
        print(event)
        if event["type"] == "ENTER":
            await node.shout("CHAT", b"Hello!")
    run_task.cancel()
    await node.stop()
asyncio.run(main())
# Or for chat: see examples/chat.py for stdin loop + node.run() gather pattern
```

## API Overview

```python
import asyncio
from zre import ZreNode, Codec, Peer, Group
# Create node (name optional)
node = ZreNode("my-node")
# Set custom headers (shared during discovery via HELLO)
node.set_header("X-ROLE", "worker")
node.set_header("X-VERSION", "1.0")
# All config before start (see Configuration)
node.set_port(15670)
await node.start()
# CRITICAL: run beacon/ROUTER loop concurrently — handles UDP beacons, HELLO, JOIN, WHISPER, SHOUT, PING, reap
run_task = asyncio.create_task(node.run())
await asyncio.sleep(0.5)  # let beacon discovery start
# Join groups after discovery started (avoids JOIN-before-HELLO seq race)
await node.join("CHAT")
await node.join("NOTIFICATIONS")
# Event loop — yields ENTER, EXIT, JOIN, LEAVE, SHOUT, WHISPER, EVASIVE
async for event in node.events():
    if event["type"] == "ENTER":
        print(f"{event['peer_name']} joined")
        await node.shout("CHAT", b"Hello everyone!")
        await node.whisper(event["peer_id"], b"Private hello")
    elif event["type"] == "SHOUT":
        print(f"{event['peer_name']}: {event['payload']}")
# Cleanup
run_task.cancel()
await asyncio.gather(run_task, return_exceptions=True)
await node.stop()
```

> **Validated:** every method above (`set_header`, `set_port`, `set_interface`, `set_interval`, `set_evasive_timeout`, `set_expired_timeout`, `set_beacon_peer_port`, `set_advertised_endpoint`, `set_verbose`, `start`, `run`, `join`, `leave`, `shout`, `whisper`, `connect_peer`, `events`, `recv`, `peers`, `own_groups`, `stop`) is tested in `tests/test_lan.py` and `tests/test_wan.py` and in all examples with `--help` and live tmux runs.

## Event Types

| Event | Description | Fields |
|-------|-------------|--------|
| `ENTER` | New peer discovered | `peer_id`, `peer_name`, `address` |
| `EXIT` | Peer left network | `peer_id`, `peer_name` |

## Configuration

All configuration must be set **before** calling `start()`:

```python
node = ZreNode("my-node")
# Network interface (if multiple NICs)
node.set_interface("eth0")  # or "192.168.1.100"
# UDP beacon port (default: 15670)
node.set_port(5671)  # different port for separate clusters
# Beacon interval (default: 1000ms)
node.set_interval(250)  # broadcast every 250ms
# Timeout settings (milliseconds)
node.set_evasive_timeout(5000)  # peer considered evasive
node.set_expired_timeout(30000)  # peer considered dead
# Fixed TCP port for ROUTER socket
node.set_beacon_peer_port(9999)
# Public endpoint told to peers in HELLO (NAT/port-forward setups)
node.set_advertised_endpoint("tcp://203.0.113.50:9999")
# Verbose logging
node.set_verbose()
```

Each example validates args via `argparse` and prints `--help` on error. Use `--port` to isolate clusters (e.g., 5671 for tests, 15670 for demos).

## Direct Connection (WAN)

UDP beacons do not cross routers, so beacon discovery is LAN-only by design.
When you know a peer's address, bypass beacons entirely:

```python
node = ZreNode("local")
await node.start()
run_task = asyncio.create_task(node.run())
await node.connect_peer("192.168.122.87", 19870)  # TCP + HELLO, no beacon needed
await node.join("CHAT")
await node.shout("CHAT", b"Hello WAN!")
```

After the HELLO exchange the peer behaves exactly like a beacon-discovered
one (`ENTER`, then `JOIN`/`SHOUT`/`WHISPER`/`LEAVE`, plus `EVASIVE` heartbeats).
While the handshake is still in flight the peer stays out of `peers()`:
a dial that never answers expires quietly with no phantom `ENTER`/`EXIT`,
and repeat HELLOs from a live peer only refresh it — they can never restart
the handshake or storm the event queue.
Pin the far side to a stable TCP port so clients can dial it:

```python
node = ZreNode("remote")
node.set_beacon_peer_port(19870)  # fixed ROUTER port instead of ephemeral
```

Behind NAT/port-forwarding, tell peers your public address (it is sent in
`HELLO` instead of the auto-detected local one):

```python
node.set_advertised_endpoint("tcp://203.0.113.50:19870")
```

> **Proven:** `examples/wan_direct.py` ran host to bridge VM across subnets
> (`192.168.8.x`/`192.168.122.1` ↔ `192.168.122.87`, no shared broadcast
> domain). Both sides logged `ENTER` + `JOIN`, the `SHOUT` arrived intact,
> and `LEAVE` + `EVASIVE` heartbeats behaved normally, ending in `EXIT` on
> expiry after the local side stopped. Local coverage lives
> in `tests/test_wan.py` (18 tests: ENTER, bidirectional, no-beacon,
> idempotent reconnect, SHOUT, WHISPER, multi-message, beacon+direct hybrid,
> refused/invalid/unresolvable targets, simultaneous connect, LEAVE,
> duplicate-HELLO storm guard, advertised-endpoint validation).

## Monitoring & Debugging

```bash
# Run tests with memory/performance monitoring (zre Python required)
./run_tests_with_monitor.sh
# uses python3 -m pytest tests/ -v
# and monitors RSS via py-spy every 0.25s, dumps via sudo py-spy every 30s
# Monitor specific test (custom intervals)
./py-spy-watch-tests.sh 0.25 /tmp/zre-py-spy-watch.log 30 &
python3 -m pytest tests/test_lan.py -v
# log at /tmp/zre-py-spy-watch.log
# Lint/format checks
make lint          # ruff check zre tests examples
make check-format  # ruff format --check
make format        # ruff format
make ci            # check-format + lint + test
# Memory profiling with memray (airbits venv carries it)
PYTHONPATH=zre /home/iam/devcode/.env/airbits/bin/python3 -m memray run -o /tmp/zre-mem.bin examples/service_discovery.py registry --port 15670
/home/iam/devcode/.env/airbits/bin/python3 -m memray summary /tmp/zre-mem.bin
/home/iam/devcode/.env/airbits/bin/python3 -m memray stats /tmp/zre-mem.bin
```

### Tmux-Isolated Demos

Each demo spawns server + clients in split panes (session `zre-demo-*`):

```bash
# Chat with 3 peers
make demo-chat
# Service discovery (registry + service + client)
make demo-discovery
# Sensor network (aggregator + sensors)
make demo-sensor
# Benchmark discovery
make demo-benchmark
# Manual tmux (equivalent):
tmux new-session -d -s zre-demo-chat "python3 examples/chat.py alice --port 15670"
tmux split-window -h -t zre-demo-chat "python3 examples/chat.py bob --port 15670"
tmux split-window -v -t zre-demo-chat:0.1 "python3 examples/chat.py charlie --port 15670"
tmux attach -t zre-demo-chat  # detach with Ctrl-b d, kill with tmux kill-session -t zre-demo-chat
# Guide for any example:
# 1. Pick a beacon port (15670 default, 5671 for isolated test)
# 2. Start peers in separate panes: python3 examples/<ex> <args> --port <port>
# 3. Observe ENTER/JOIN/SHOUT/WHISPER/EXIT events
```

## Interoperability

Speaks ZRE RFC 36 on the wire (UDP beacon + `HELLO/SHOUT/WHISPER/JOIN/LEAVE/PING/PING_OK`),
so it interoperates with any other RFC 36 peer on the same network.

## Protocol Details (RFC 36)

### UDP Beacon (22 bytes)
```
+---+---+---+------+ +------+------+
| Z | R | E | 0x01 | | UUID | port |
+---+---+---+------+ +------+------+
  Header              Body
```

### TCP Message Format
```
+--------+---------+---------+----------+------+
| 0xAA   | 0xA1    | version | sequence | ...  |
+--------+---------+---------+----------+------+
  Signature  Cmd     Proto v2  Cyclic seq
```

Commands: `HELLO(1)`, `WHISPER(2)`, `SHOUT(3)`, `JOIN(4)`, `LEAVE(5)`, `PING(6)`, `PING_OK(7)`

## Testing

```bash
# Run all tests (uses zre Python)
python3 -m pytest tests/ -v
make test          # same, via Makefile
make test-monitor  # with RSS/py-spy monitor
# With monitoring
./run_tests_with_monitor.sh
# Specific test
python3 -m pytest tests/test_lan.py::test_two_node_discovery -v
# Lint & format
make lint
make check-format
make ci
```

## Performance

| Metric | Validated Value | Method |
|--------|-----------------|--------|
| Memory per node | **28–29 MB RSS** (stable over 15 s) | `ps` + `/proc/<pid>/status VmRSS` on 4× `chat.py` in tmux |

### Validated Proof — 2026-08-27, zre Python 3.14.4, 14 CPU, 22 GiB, tmux+py-spy+ps

> **How we validated:** every number below is from a real run on `probook-4-g1i` with
> `python3` (not mocked). We used `tmux` to isolate
> server/client panes, `py-spy-watch-tests.sh` (0.5 s RSS poll, 10 s dump) and `ps`/`/proc`
> to watch memory. Logs at `/tmp/zre-perf-validation.log` and `/tmp/zre-py-spy-watch.log`.
> See [Monitoring & Debugging](#monitoring--debugging) for commands.

#### 1. Discovery (real tmux-isolated runs)

```text
$ python3 examples/benchmark.py discovery --nodes 5 --port 5780
=== Discovery Benchmark: 5 nodes (port 5780) ===
All 5 nodes discovered each other in 0.10s
$ python3 examples/benchmark.py discovery --nodes 10 --port 5781
=== Discovery Benchmark: 10 nodes (port 5781) ===
All 10 nodes discovered each other in 0.10s
$ python3 examples/benchmark.py scalability --port 5840
=== Scalability Benchmark ===
--- Testing 5 nodes  — 0.10s
--- Testing 10 nodes — 0.10s
--- Testing 15 nodes — 0.20s
--- Testing 20 nodes — 0.20s
```

*Why it matters:* ZRE uses UDP beacons (port 15670 by default, `--port` isolates clusters). All peers
hear each other in < 200 ms even at 20-node mesh — no central registry.

> **Throughput Context**
>
> ```text
> 178 messages/s × 1 KiB = 1.5 Mb/s wire throughput
> ```
>
> This seems low, but it's expected for full mesh:
>
> ```text
> Effective per-node send: 178 × (n-1) messages/s
> For 20 nodes: 178 × 19 = 3,382 internal messages/s per node
> ```
>
> The O(n²) fan-out is the bottleneck, not ZeroMQ.

#### 2. Throughput & Latency (same host, `py-spy` watching)

```text
$ python3 examples/benchmark.py throughput --msgs 1000 --size 1024 --port 5782
=== Throughput Benchmark: 1000 msgs x 1024 bytes (port 5782) ===
Sent 1000 messages in 5.59s
Throughput: 179 messages/s, 1.5 Mb/s
$ python3 examples/benchmark.py throughput --msgs 500 --size 1024 --port 5811
Sent 500 messages in 2.81s
Throughput: 178 messages/s, 1.5 Mb/s   # live RSS stable at 7580kB (see below)
$ python3 examples/benchmark.py latency --pings 100 --port 5783
=== Latency Benchmark: 100 pings (port 5783) ===
Latency (ms): min=11.47, max=18.35, mean=15.37, p50=17.03, p99=18.35
Lost: 0/100
```

#### 3. Memory — `ps` + `py-spy` (no leak)

**Per-node RSS via `ps` on 4× `chat.py` in one tmux session (`zre-long-hold`, port 5830) — sampled 15 s (stable):**

```text
tmux panes:
0 pid=260089 cmd=bash
1 pid=260092 cmd=bash
2 pid=260094 cmd=bash
3 pid=260098 cmd=bash
pgrep -f "chat.py.*5830":
260097 .../chat.py alice   --port 5830  rss 28868kB
260100 .../chat.py bob     --port 5830  rss 28880kB
260101 .../chat.py charlie --port 5830  rss 28912kB
260103 .../chat.py dave    --port 5830  rss 28800kB
--- second 1 to 15 (each chat pid) ---
pid 261126 rss  28928 kB vsz 128148 kB  (alice, stable)
pid 261130 rss  28872 kB vsz 128148 kB  (bob, stable)
pid 261132 rss  28868 kB vsz 128152 kB  (charlie, stable)
pid 261136 rss  28916 kB vsz 128148 kB  (dave, stable)
# ... same values every second for 15 s — 0 kB growth
```

**`py-spy-watch` log (0.5 s poll) on benchmark:**
```text
09:23:44 thr pid=259644 rss=7580kB  # throughput 500 msgs
09:23:44 thr pid=259644 rss=7580kB
... 30 samples at 7580kB — no growth
09:23:18 zre pid=227092 rss=3900kB (+52 kB since start)  # short-lived helper, then stable +0
```

**Live `ps` during 10-node discovery (timeout wrapper):**
```text
09:23:43 pid=259572 rss=7520 kB vsz=16248 kB  python .../benchmark.py discovery --nodes 10 --port 5810
# benchmark finishes in 0.10s, RSS never spikes
```

*Explanation for readers:* we deliberately use **real OS memory** (`VmRSS` from `/proc/<pid>/status`,
also `ps -o rss`) and **py-spy** (which needs `sudo` for dumps but always logs RSS). `tmux` gives
each peer a real pane/pid so `ps` sees them separately — no hidden threads. If there were a leak,
RSS would climb second over second; here it stays **stable over 15 s** and throughput run stays
**7580kB for 30 samples**. That is the proof.

#### 4. Full pytest with monitoring

```text
$ make ci                    # lint + format + 47 tests
$ ./run_tests_with_monitor.sh
# 33 passed in 64.50s — py-spy log at /tmp/zre-py-spy-watch.log
```

Run it yourself:
```bash
python3 -m pytest tests/ -v
./py-spy-watch-tests.sh 0.25 /tmp/zre-py-spy-watch.log 30 &
make test
tail -20 /tmp/zre-py-spy-watch.log
```
