INT. INTERVIEW ROOM - AFTERNOON

DS MALIK sits opposite KARA. A recorder is running.

MALIK
For the tape, you work at the museum.

KARA
I volunteer.

MALIK
Three days a week.

KARA
Four, if Simon forgets his daughter has ballet.

MALIK
And you had access to the archive?

KARA
I had access to the kettle near the archive.

MALIK
The missing medal was last logged at 13:40.

KARA
Then perhaps question whoever logs medals at lunchtime.

MALIK
That was you.

KARA
I was making a point.

MALIK
Make another one. Where is it?

KARA leans forward.

KARA
Detective, that medal belonged to a nurse who pulled six men out of a burning ward. It sat for forty years in a drawer labelled “Miscellaneous.” Last month the board decided to sell it quietly to pay for a touchscreen display no one over nine will use.

MALIK
So you took it.

KARA
I removed it from danger.

MALIK
That is theft with better posture.

KARA
Maybe. But the nurse’s granddaughter is outside with documents proving the family loaned it, not donated it.

MALIK
Why not say that first?

KARA
Because I wanted to know whether you cared what was stolen, or only that someone stole it.
