INT. SMALL BEDROOM - DAWN

A person wakes before the alarm. They reach to silence it before it rings.

They sit on the edge of the bed, listening to the house. Nothing.

They cross to a chair where a neat outfit has been laid out. They touch the sleeve as though testing whether it belongs to them.

At the window, they notice a paper bird on the sill outside. It is wet from rain.

They open the window carefully and bring it in. Inside the fold is a tiny photograph. We do not see it, but they do.

Their body changes. First surprise. Then hurt. Then something like hope, which they try to suppress.

They look towards the bedroom door, deciding whether to hide it.

Footsteps approach outside.

They tuck the photograph into their sleeve, place the paper bird on the desk, then sit on the bed exactly as they were before.

The door handle turns.

They inhale, ready to perform the version of themselves everyone expects.
