The Coat

A monologue.

Character:
EVELYN

(A coat hangs on a chair.)

EVELYN
I told myself I kept it because it was useful.

(She touches the sleeve.)

EVELYN
Pockets. Warmth. A sensible colour.

(A pause.)

EVELYN
But the truth is less tidy.

EVELYN
It still knows the shape of someone leaving.

(She folds the coat.)

EVELYN
Tomorrow I will give it away.

EVELYN
Tonight, it can keep the chair company.
